Basketball

Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, typically consisting of five players each, compete to score points by throwing a ball through the opposing team’s hoop or goal, which is elevated 10 feet above the playing surface. The game is played on a rectangular court, divided into two main sections, with a hoop at each end. Points are scored by shooting the basketball through the opponent’s hoop—worth two points for shots taken inside the three-point line and three points for shots taken from outside this line; free throws, awarded after certain fouls, are worth one point each.

Basketball combines elements of speed, agility, strategy, and teamwork. Players can advance the ball by dribbling (bouncing the ball while running) or passing it to teammates. Defensively, teams attempt to prevent scoring by blocking shots, stealing the ball, or rebounding missed shots.

Founded in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, basketball has evolved into a widely popular sport globally, with organized leagues at various levels, including professional, collegiate, and amateur. It is governed by specific rules, including violations such as traveling and fouls, and has a well-defined scoring system. The sport emphasizes skill development in shooting, dribbling, and teamwork.
